Doran Racing’s Swanson Sets Second-Fastest Lap
Of Saturday’s Glen Niebel Classic at Anderson
Before Engine Problems Force Him Out of Event

ANDERSON, Ind., July 10 — Doran Racing and Kody Swanson went into Saturday’s Glen Niebel Classic at Anderson Speedway as the defending race winners and the point leaders of the 500 Sprint Car Tour. Unfortunately an engine problem caused the team a DNF and it ended up 17th in the final rundown.

Still, Swanson set the second-fastest lap of the race when he was timed in 11.520 seconds for the quarter-mile, high-banked asphalt oval on lap seven. That was only 0.038 off the fastest lap run during the 100-lap event, which was the 11.482 on lap four set by the eventual race winner, Kyle O’Gara.

Unofficially Swanson is now third in the point standings in the inaugural season of the 500 Sprint Car Tour, behind new leader Dakoda Armstrong and Billy Wease.

There are still five 500 Sprint Car Tour races remaining, including another one at Anderson Speedway on July 30. Before that the team will also compete in a USAC Silver Crown race at Winchester (Ind.) Speedway on July 21. Swanson is currently third in that series’ point standings too.

Swanson qualified fifth in the 23-car field with a time of 11.264. The inversion was a 10, so that would have put the Henry Repeating Arms/Glenn Farms/Duncan Oil No. 44 sixth on the grid for the start. However, the team elected to change a tire before the race, which forced the Lebanon, Ohio-based team’s entry to the back of the field for the start.

Swanson, a native of Kingsburg, Calif., who now lives in Indianapolis, got to work. He was 19th on lap one, 18th on lap three, 17th on lap five, 16th on lap seven when he set his fastest lap, and 15th on lap 15. He was 14th on lap 23 and 13th at the one-quarter mark, lap 25. On that lap Davey Hamilton Jr. and Travis Welpott got together up high in Turn 4 to bring out the second caution flag. Welpott was third at the time and Hamilton was fifth, so that would have moved Swanson up to 11th for the restart, with 75 more laps to see how far up the scoreboard he could proceed.

Unfortunately 13th was the highest he got on Saturday, however, as he stopped on the track under that yellow, which put him back to 17th for the restart. He advanced to 16th on lap 34, but pulled off the track on the backstretch with 36 laps complete due to a problem with the car’s engine.

There were only two leaders in the race. Welpott led the first 10 laps and O’Gara led the rest. Bobby Santos III, Armstrong, Wease and Tyler Roahrig rounded out the top five.

The event was streamed live by MAVTV Pro on Flo Racing.
